SENSE OF SEX

INTRODUCTION

These miscellaneous essays, articles, and pages from my journal are from my life long effort to make sense of the mysterious (to me) realm of sex. I think that of all our human capacities, none, save our inclinations to be selfing, are so commonly put down on and kept in the dark. Society seems better equipped to deal with every other aspect of who we humans are, including our "selfishness," than with our sexuality.

In this familiar context best characterized by attempts at fierce control, denial, and repression, I, like many others, have mostly struggled in private with my efforts to make sense of sex. Here I "go public" with some of the insights I have happened upon. I view each as honest but temporary--the clearest I was seeing at the time of its writing (spanning some 36 years), but subject to further revision or even dismissal with more experience. In rereading these pages, pulled from my journal and other hiding places, I easily see now some of the progressions in my pilgrimage as well as evolutions in my thinking.

I share them not with any sense of "rightness" or "the truth" for anyone except myself. I do so with two reasons apparent to me just now: first, for the personal experience of bringing my private self more into the light--to see how I will react to being seen in these regards; and secondly, to make a mirror of myself in which others who care to may look for a clearer image of themselves.
